Bio

Boston-based Australian drummer, arranger & composer Tommy X. Wu draws on a background in jazz and electronic production. Born in Shanghai, China and later moving to Melbourne, Australia, Wu’s artistic voice reflects the cross-cultural influences of the cities he has lived in.

A recent recipient of DownBeat magazine’s SMA honor for his “outstanding composition” Mass Ave 3AM, Wu is currently developing this work into a larger body of music for his forthcoming debut album, set for release in early 2027. He also produces under the alias TOMY., through which he has self-released the EP BLUEMEN AND THE RED SKY, blending through-composed structures with an experimental electronic sound.

As a bandleader, Wu leads the ensemble Tommy Wu & Friends, a project dedicated to engaging the jazz tradition through exploring contemporary composition and improvisation. In 2025, his ensemble undertook a six-city tour in China, presenting original compositions to a variety of audiences across the country. Since its inception in 2022, the group has brought together musicians of various nationalities and has performed in Australia, China, and USA in venues such as JZ Club, Paris Cat Jazz Club, Wally’s Jazz Cafe and more…

In 2023, Tommy moved to Boston, USA to attend the Berklee College of Music, where he was an awardee of the World Tour Scholarship and recently, the Quincy Jones Scholarship. He has studied Jazz Composition with Greg Hopkins, Ayn Inserto, and Bob Pilkington, and has performed with acclaimed artists including John Fedchock, Miguel Zenón, Christine Jensen, Vicente Archer, Gray Sargent, and Marshall Wood.
